The 2012 leadership seminar will be held on April 28, 29, 30 (Saturday-Monday) in El Paso, Texas at the El Paso Community College Administration Center on 9050 Viscount Boulevard.

Seminar FAQ:

Q: Where will the seminar be held?
A: The Seminar will take place at the El Paso County Community College (EPCC) Administrative
Center, 9050 Viscount Blvd. El Paso, Texas.
Q: When will the seminar be held?
A: Seminar participants may register any time after 7:00 a.m., but before 8:15 a.m. on Saturday, April
28, 2012. The Far West Texas Leadership Seminar will begin with orientation on April 28, 2012 at
8:30 a.m. and conclude around 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 30, 2012.
Q: Where should I go when I arrive?
A: If you are driving, Exit I-10 at Hawkins Blvd., exit 26. Follow Hawkins north to Viscount. Make
a right on Viscount. At the second light from Hawkins, make a right turn into the EPCC property.
The street sign will say “EPCC”. Registration will be at EPCC Administrative Center, Bldg A. A
HOBY committee member will greet and check you in.
Q: What kind of program is planned?
A: During your HOBY seminar experience, many dynamic leaders – all volunteers from the fields of
business, education, government, and the professions – will address numerous aspects of our
changing world and the challenges future leaders will confront. The program will not promote any
specific political party, business, religion, or way of thinking, but it is designed to develop an
awareness of present and future issues by actively involving seminar participants in discussions and
informal debate. You will have the opportunity to ask questions of the discussion leaders
throughout the weekend, which leads to a fuller understanding of topics presented.
During the Seminar, it will be determined which two participants (one boy and one girl) will
represent Far West Texas at Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership’s World Leadership Congress
(WLC) in July 2012.
Q: What are the accommodations like?
A: The Administrative Center will provide us a large facility to conduct the forums as well as breaking
out into groups. Participants are required to stay overnight both Saturday and Sunday and
will be assigned to rooms at the hotel (two per room) on floors reserved exclusively for the
seminar. Everyone will receive nutritious breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. A snack area with
nutritious snacks and beverages will be available throughout the weekend. The seminar will be
chaperoned by qualified men and women facilitators and support staff who will be staying at the
facilities 24-hours-a-day.
Q: What if I need to take medication while I am at the seminar?
A: Please provide information about your medication on the Record of Medical History form (March
2012 local registration packet) and bring a doctor’s note with you to the seminar. Make sure to
read and comply with HOBY’s Policy for Use of Medication During a HOBY Event. Both
documents are included in this packet.
Q: If necessary, how may I be contacted during the seminar?
A: Parents, friends, and family members are discouraged from calling students during the seminar due
to the confusion created when meetings are interrupted. Participants, however, may call their
parents during breaks. In case of emergency, your parent(s) or guardian should call EPCC at (915) 831-2200. They will be able to find us at any time throughout the weekend. You may also
call one of the cell numbers listed on the Ambassador Rules and Regulations
Q: Who pays for the seminar?
A: All costs other than 1) registration fees ($150.00 per initial student, $325.00 for each additional
student from the same school) and 2) travel expenses to the seminar have been paid by
sponsors throughout Far West Texas, that is, businesses, foundations, individuals, and service
organizations wishing to support leadership education. The Far West Texas Seminar is
coordinated and funded in part by members of the Junior Women’s Club of El Paso and many El
Paso Optimist, Lions and Kiwanis clubs. Other civic organizations involved in the seminar are the
Military Order of World Wars and General Federation of Women’s Clubs throughout the Far West
Texas area.
Q: What should I wear at the seminar?
A: Dress is casual throughout the weekend except for the banquet on Monday. Young men are
expected to wear a nice dress/sport coat and tie. One day you will be asked to wear the HOBY Tshirt
which you will receive when you arrive.
Q: What transportation arrangements have been made?
A: We are unable to provide transportation to the seminar on Saturday and from the seminar on
Monday. If you are arriving via air, train, or bus, please include all details of your itinerary on the
travel itinerary form (March 2012 local registration packet). The seminar staff will ensure you are
